In general, any CEO or a strategic business manager is trying to steer his or her business in a direction where the business will develop an edge over rival firms.
Michael Porter’s model of Five Forces can be used to better understand the industry context in which the firm operates. Porter’s Five Force model is a strategy tool that is used to analyze attractiveness of an industry structure.

+What is good about Porter’s Five Forces model?

Prof. Porter has the ability to rewrite complex concepts in relatively easily accessible formats that everyone can understand. His book about the Five Force model is written in a very easy and understandable language. Even though this model is backed up by some complex model, the model itself is simple and easily comprehensible at all levels.
Porter’s Five Forces model provides suggested points under each main heading, by which you can develop a broad and sophisticated analysis of competitive position.
This can be then used when creating strategy, plans, or making investment decisions about your business or organization.

*Does Porter’s Five Forces model really work?

Theoreticians have different view on this. While some agree that Five Forces model is the ultimate explanation of how world works, others disagree. It depends in what time frame we judge the state of the facts. Even Michael Porter himself acknowledges that time is of essence when it comes to how his forces interact with each other.
Numerous economic studies have shown that different industries can sustain different levels of profitability. This can be attributed to differences in industry structures.

MARKET: This week, VNINDEX dropped 25.7 points (-5.65%) to close at 429.14 point, with 108 gainers, 108 decliners and 20 unchanged. Total volume reached 182 mil, declined -13.3%, total value reached VND 4460.5 bil declined -27.9% compare to last week. On the HNX, index dropped 13.13 points (-9.99%) to close at 118.28.

The market lost points this week due to several reasons such as (1) pressure to sell stocks that have been used as loan collaterals, (2) decline of investor confidence in the growth of the stock market (3) concerns about double dip recession of the global economy.

The fall off of Nikkei from the important psychological thresholds of 9000 points and the Dow off the 10,000 points also caused market sentiment to worsen. Technical support levels became less important when the pessimistic psychology dominated the market. Value declined 2 times faster than volume suggesting that sellers were willing to sell at lower prices to get rid of the game.

Two slightly up sessions in later half of the week were not enough to rescue market from suffering one of biggest weekly drops since the beginning of the year. The good news is the market rose slightly in the last two days bringing the chain of consecutive down days to a halt. However, the significantly squeezed liquidity is not a good sign as it shows the strength of the market is still quite fragile. Moreover, this minor recovery based largely on the positive performance of some large caps stocks such as BVH, PVF, KBC, DPM, MSN while several others went down or remained unchanged.

ECONOMY: There was no big change in interbank markets during the week. Up to 26th Aug there a net-injection of around VND1443 billion by the SBV through open market operations. Meanwhile, the interbank rates slightly fell as compared to the week before.

The VND/USD rates continued to stay high at around VND19,500 per USD in both unofficial and official markets. The pressure on the VND is expected to remain in the coming time as loans in USD are going to expire and trade deficit may be increasing.

Many Vietnam’s main economic indicators in August were released positively. However, higher interest rates are still the main obstacle to a full recovery of the economy.

International stocks fell as a record plunge in U.S. home sales and slowing export growth in Japan added to evidence the global recovery is faltering.

WHO DO WHAT: Foreign investors were net buyers with VND 77.9 bil. On the HSX they net bought VND 104.1 bil (bought VND 541.7 bil, sold VND 437.6 bil), and on the HNX they net sold VND -26.2 bil (bought VND 35.9 bil, sold VND 62.1 bil).

TECHNICAL: With the volume surging in 2 days prior to the market rallies in the last 2 days of the week, we think bottoming fishing was strong and more importantly, there were not many sellers then after. Rumors on margin call pressure turned to be unrealistic as the market indeed did not rally for quite a long time and thus there were not much leveraged products available during that period. This notion however could be applied to some stocks which did surge without any fundamental justification in the previous months. Overall, we want to believe that the market is about to establish a bottom area. It’s still hard to conclude that the market should advance strongly, but apparently shares of stocks with high earnings and relatively low PE in 2010 should be the buy targets because they at least potentially yield good dividends.

TRADING PLANS: Institutional investors should buy. Daily traders if currently with shares should hold. If without shares, it’s worth considering buying shares of stocks with good earnings and PE of 5-6 times (this PE ratio in our view is equivalent to a required rated of return of around 15-20% for Vietnam market at the present).
